Out of Georgia, into the south....

.....Carolina, that is. First, Jim and Gay, our hosts at Hamilton Turner, gave us a farewell breakfast of homemade sausage gravy and biscuits, with a fried egg atop each of two biscuit towers. Of course, that came AFTER the most delicious blueberry scones and fresh fruit EVER !
On the road (gas was 1.53 per gallon, by the way) to South Carolina for a pilgrimage to Maurice's Piggy City outside of Columbia, SC. We took a turn off the I26 (as they call it here), to visit a city called Walterboro. A wonderful South Carolina artisan shop and some very interesting buildings from the mid 1800's. We found another synagogue right there in town (in a residential neighborhood, by the way), and fourteen churches, including one of the oldest African Baptist Churches in the US. ,
MUST KEEP MOVING !!! Another hour and a half until we reached Maurice's and had BBQ even better than we remember it being when we were there over twenty years ago. Mel had Maurice's sauced ribs, some pork hash over rice and hushpuppies . And, a Coke !!!
I had a delicious sauced beef sandwich, with hushpuppies and UNsweet tea ! A really nice South Carolina yellow mustard based sauce and loads to eat.
We had to walk a little bit, nearby South Carolina State University campus was just right. :)
Back in the car, too full to think about any more food ! Well, almost. When we checked in to the Mooresville, North Carolina, Hampton Inn, we were invited in to their adorable holiday decorated lobby for some chicken wings, carrots, cauliflower, ginger cookies, apple cider, and more UNsweet tea !
Now, it's time to close the blog. We leave in the morning for our final two hours drive to Mt. Airy (Mayberry), NC. We'll probably have lunch at the Snappy Lunch Diner on Andy Griffith Parkway for their take on NC BBQ (or their world famous fried pork sandwich---Barney Fife's favorite). And, surely the rain we drove through all day today will end tomorrow.
