Biltmore Day

Rain, yes. Incredible mansion and grounds at the Biltmore estate, the home of George Vanderbilt---richy rich, yes. Gorgeous holiday decorations, yes. The only thing missing is BBQ for today. Our breakfast this morning included cheese grits, eggs, potato hash, topped with cornflakes and baked crisp, sauteed apples, blintzes, and biscuits. YUMMY !!!
We had lunch at the mansion, light---turkey sandwich on ciabatta, with homemade cranberry sauce. Tonight, we will be eating at the Chef's table in the Horizons Restaurant here at the Inn.
Jeeez, it sounds like all we do is eat. Jeeez, all we do is eat. :)
Love to you ALL. xoxo

Run little gingerbread man....

....as fast as you can, your house is about to win a prize. :)
Let me start with our final breakfast at Sobotta House: today was apparently a banana theme day. We started with a parfait dish of cold oatmeal, mixed with vanilla yogurt and sliced bananas, and some sliced peaches and blueberries. At first, I wasn't sure, but it was really good. That was followed by a banana nut muffin, with a light cream cheese frosting ON THE BOTTOM ! Yummm. The entree today was buckwheat pancakes with bananas foster (minus the ice cream) on top. SO MUCH POTASSIUM !!! Sooooo good !
We loaded up the car, got gas and hit the road south to Asheville. The ride went well, Christmas music all the way. Two hours later, we drove up to an exquisite former 200 room inn, built in 1919, with 350 additional rooms added in two more modern wings. Not for us, though, we are in the original inn in a lovely room that looks out over the gardens, golf course, and the Smokies. Photos first, then we wandered around to one of the five restaurants. No BBQ lunch today; Mel had a gorgeous Chicken Bruschetta, with a grilled chicken breast with Argentine parmaggiano, crispy procuitto and fresh tomato, with a side of really great warm German potato salad. He started with a Oyster Brie bisque, topped with a fresh fried oyster. Lovely bits of chopped oyster throughout the soup. Mel was very happy. Me, too ! I had a lovely grilled Salmon BLT, without the B. I had the potato salad on my plate, as well, and the sandwich was delicious. We both missed the barbeque, but were very happy with lunch.
Then, we walked the entire property, enjoyed all 400 Christmas trees, and wandered through the 115 entries in the National Gingerbread House. AMAZING what you can do with a little flour, ginger, sugar and fondant. Pictures will be available so that you can enjoy all of that delicious beauty. The top 25 of the houses are going to New York next week to be on display.
Decorations everywhere.
We stopped in the Great Hall lobby bar for a beer (Mel) and a virgin coffee and Kaluah (well almost a virgin, half a shot) for me. We watched a little football and a lot of the humongous fireplace in the hall. We had a live entertainer (who thought he was one of the Little Rascals (the singing group, not the 1939 TV show characters). Lots of great 60's music. We moved to barbequed chicken wings (YAY for US, bar b q after all) that we shared---walked to the Vanderbilt wing to view even more gingerbread houses and even more decorations.
We just returned to the room to find a charming Chanukah ornament depicting the inn, and now we're going to find something on TV that is NOT football. I had a bad day for me---good for Poppa.
Back down to the 30's tonight, after tryiing real hard to make it to 40 today. Our window coverings are open (the mountains can't see in), and we'll see the sun come up in the morning. The sunset was a little cloudy.
Tomorrow, the BILTMORE estate. Tickets were included with our room and apparently that is some gorgeous place, dressed for the holidays.
We're very happy to be here; but miss you all very much. More manana. xoxoxox

For our last Mt. Airy evening...

.....we just got back from the epitome of North Carolina BBQ. World BBQ Champs, Lexington BarBeQue in Lexington, NC. Something to do after our enjoyable concert at the Main Street Cinema this morning after breakfast. We got to see two acts: The Buffalo Creek String Band, which did some cool "Red Fiddle" songs, including some real honky tonk; and then the sweet tones of the Chords of Faith, and now we know how to call upon Jesus, AMEN !!!! It was free, exceptn' if you wanted pop corn or coke, which we certainly did not after that breakfast.

So, we wandered around Mayberry Main Street for one last time, and then got in the car for the 1 hour ride to Lexington. Brand new BBQ experience. This was sliced pork shoulder, which had been smoked for 14 hours being mopped with NC Lexington sauce. This is a nearly clear liquid heavy with pepper and vinegar. Mel absolutely loved it, and he loved the onion rings, hushpuppies and Q slaw (no mayo, just more of that pepper vinegar), and he really loved the starter tray of fried pork skins. The original chicarrones, says former Judge Grossman. Mrs. G (that's nana---me) enjoyed a cookhouse steak (pounded thin and fried, of course) sandwich, also with that great vinegar sauce and cole slaw. I shared the rings, puppies and mine came sitting on a small lettuce and tomato salad. We ate about as much as we could (about half), and then magically found room for a holy crap homemade cherry cobbler. I learned a lot from that cobbler, and my next one will be like this one, I hope. Coke for Dad; unsweet tea for me, and then a ride back that included a stop for photos of Mount Pilot (just like in the TV show)---a not too tall, but very cool mountainette. :)

It's about 6 now, and we just got back to the room---still very full and kind of tired. We'll be fine for cookies in about an hour, with some coffee or tea, and then we'll pack so we can leave right after what I'm sure will be another award winning breakfast.
It warmed up to about 43 today, but the sun was out and it didn't feel too bad, with our ski jackets and scarves on. I think we probably looked like south Floridians in the cold.
Since we can't use the computer and the TV at the same time, I'll end now, and pick up tomorrow evening, after we check in at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The gingerbread houses are already there, waiting for the final competition in the National Gingerbread House Contest. We'll have lots of pix of that.

We love you all very much and miss you, and think about you with everything we do and eat.
LOVE TO YOU ALL. BBQ BOB and BETTY ! :) xoxoxoxoxo

MAYBERRY

I'm so happy to be able to transcribe my notes into the blog, so that I didn't forget anything while it was happening. After a gorgeous breakfast of egg, cheese and homemade sausage slices in a lovely pastry dome; lemon poppy muffin filled with lemon curd and fruit on the side, FLORIDA grapefruit juice and coffee---off to Main Street.
We walked into each and every shop along that street and saw pictures of the old TV series stars with all of the shop owners. In September, they do Mayberry Days here and everyone who is still standing comes by for a parade and visit with the businesses. After about two hours of a great walking tour, we happened by Snappy Lunch, which offers a $4.00 special of the Pork Sandwhich that Andy and Barney ate several times during the series. Mel loved it, battered and fried with coleslaw, chili and mustard and the "messiest thing I ever ate" according to former Judge Grossman. I had the $1.80 "loose meat" sandwich-- chopped beef, coleslaw, and mustard and really good. We opted not to take the chips; I had an iced decaf coffee (the waitress said it was the first one she ever made) and Mel had a Coke ! Outside the restaurant, I had my picture "made" with Otis Campbell, the town drunk. How hilarious !
After that, we walked way down south Main Street to the old Courthouse, jail, Mayor's office, Wally's Gas Station and took pictures of everything. Back to the car, we decided that we needed another winery excursion, so we drove about ten miles to the Round Peak vineyard, where once again Mel tasted some nice "new wines" and selected a couple of bottles to add to our collection. We met with a very knowledgeable vintner who gave us a great history and winemaking lesson.
After a long day in Mayberry, I felt I owed Mel something, so (no, it's not what you think---eeeuw how disgusting) we went to the Pine Street theater and saw the NEW The Day the Earth Stood Still. We ran into the theater from the car (38 degrees) and when we got out it was 7:20 and dark and even colder, but we got to see what has to be one of the greatest moons of all time. I know from speaking to you guys that you got to see it too, and tonight (Saturday) should be another gorgeous spectacle.
After the movies, we were too cold to get out at a restaurant, so Mel treated me to a Sonic Drive In chicken sandwich, which we ate in the car. The nice lady who skated it out to the car for us was wearing a snow suit. BRRRR. I had a limeade, which was a great treat for me. Mel had a XL Coney dog with mustard and cole slaw (he's turning into a cabbage, I think) and coffee. We shared Tater Tots (I haven't had one since Tracee was about ten).
Back just in time to watch the Frosty the Snowman shows. And, to be told that the cable and Internet were back up. So, here we are.....
This morning we came down to meet other guests and enjoy a breakfast that started with yogurt and fresh fruit, moved on to a pound cake filled with fresh crem fraishe and strawberries and THEN, baguette french toast, stuffed with cream cheese with a fresh warm berry compote over it, and more home made sausage for Mel to enjoy. We'll have to see what we do about lunch or dinner to get in today's BBQ stop. BURP !!!!
We're off now to a live bluegrass concert at the old cinema on Main Street and now that we're caught up, I'll be back with today's fun later this evening.
Miss and love you all.

Internet is back

I'm sorry for the delay, but here in Mayberry when the cable goes out, so does the internet. We're back up, and I'm resuming our commentary. By the way, this is a great trip, and this blogging is great fun, too. We miss you all.

Thursday, December 11th

Made our way in the POURING rain from outside Charlotte (Mooresville) to Mt. Airy, after a typical Hampton Inn breakfast of a blueberry muffin and fruit and coffee (tea for me). On our approach, we stopped for gas just south of the exit we needed and found another driveway to Shelton Vineyards. Hmmmm.....rainy, wine tasting, warm and dry inside.....why not???? What a find !!!! Mel tasted while I shopped for cute winey (and whiney) things. He found a terrific claret which we are going to share on Christmas Eve Gooseday and hopefullly y'all will enjoy it as much as Mel did. I actually tasted it, and it's very Dickensian, so prefect for our family lunch. :)
After the tasting, we decided to have lunch at the winery's award winning restaurant, right in front of their fireplace. Mel had a fabulous organic roasted chicken with a cream/cognac mushroom sauce. I had a very yummy mushroom brie phyllo pastry (what is it with me and phyllo on this trip?) and then we shared a s'more tart with a gingerbread crust and chocolate ganache filling. HOLY CHOCOLADA !!!! Girl Scouts was never like this !!!!
We tore ourselves away from the vineyard and finished the drive to our very picturesque Mt. Airy Bed and Breakfast (found by our agent, Brenna) the Sobotta Inn. Again, a lovely 7 room inn beautifully decorated for the holidays (still no menorahs) and taken to our room facing the elegant gardens. It was still pouring, but there were cardinals in every tree outside. LOVELY !
We spent some time with the Inn's owner (formerly from Tampa) in front of the fire, near the christmas tree, with a cup of coffee and RED VELVET CUPCAKES !!!! Oh, lordy, they were good. We unpacked, took some pictures and then decided that the BBQ for the day would be at Little Richard's across from the Belks at the Mayberry Mall. North Carolina sauce is vinegary and clear and very good for cutting into the delicious fat of Mel's brisket plate, with corn fritters and baked beans. My chicken legs were excellent, just the right smoke and sauce, and my sides were fried squash and NC potato salad. No dessert there, since there are two more RED VELVET CUPCAKES waiting for us at the Inn, with lovely tea.
Early to bed, so that we can be at the Mayberry Main Street shops when they open at 10.
xoxo

Out of Georgia, into the south....

.....Carolina, that is. First, Jim and Gay, our hosts at Hamilton Turner, gave us a farewell breakfast of homemade sausage gravy and biscuits, with a fried egg atop each of two biscuit towers. Of course, that came AFTER the most delicious blueberry scones and fresh fruit EVER !
On the road (gas was 1.53 per gallon, by the way) to South Carolina for a pilgrimage to Maurice's Piggy City outside of Columbia, SC. We took a turn off the I26 (as they call it here), to visit a city called Walterboro. A wonderful South Carolina artisan shop and some very interesting buildings from the mid 1800's. We found another synagogue right there in town (in a residential neighborhood, by the way), and fourteen churches, including one of the oldest African Baptist Churches in the US. ,
MUST KEEP MOVING !!! Another hour and a half until we reached Maurice's and had BBQ even better than we remember it being when we were there over twenty years ago. Mel had Maurice's sauced ribs, some pork hash over rice and hushpuppies . And, a Coke !!!
I had a delicious sauced beef sandwich, with hushpuppies and UNsweet tea ! A really nice South Carolina yellow mustard based sauce and loads to eat.
We had to walk a little bit, nearby South Carolina State University campus was just right. :)
Back in the car, too full to think about any more food ! Well, almost. When we checked in to the Mooresville, North Carolina, Hampton Inn, we were invited in to their adorable holiday decorated lobby for some chicken wings, carrots, cauliflower, ginger cookies, apple cider, and more UNsweet tea !
Now, it's time to close the blog. We leave in the morning for our final two hours drive to Mt. Airy (Mayberry), NC. We'll probably have lunch at the Snappy Lunch Diner on Andy Griffith Parkway for their take on NC BBQ (or their world famous fried pork sandwich---Barney Fife's favorite). And, surely the rain we drove through all day today will end tomorrow.
Back tomorrow !

Savannah

Up early, ready for the coffee and newspapers downstairs in the beautifully decorated parlor with its fourteen foot "holiday" tree---hmmm, no menorahs here either. :)
Into the dining room, with a fireplace, quite like the one we had roaring in our room, for a buffet loaded with apple spice bread (NO RAISINS ), fresh fruit, yogurt, fresh orange juice from Florida, and then served a lovely breakfast of eggs benedict (2). I passed on the hot entree and had another piece of that gorgeous apple bread. Tea and coffee to linger over; and then on to the trolley for a tour of Old Savannah. 21 squares later, and a visit to a beautiful Cathedral next door to our Inn, we grabbed a quick bite of homemade tomato soup and shared a turkey sandwich, knowing BBQ was just one meal away !
Walked the citymarket and a couple of more squares to take loads of pictures, AND find the actual synagogue that used to be a church---a lovely place !
Back in time for lemonade and cookies; then a rest and then downstairs for wine and spanikopita and baby quiches (no crab) !
We relaxed in the parlor until it was time for the pedicab (driven by an architect student) to take us to Bistro Savannah for yet another rather upscale BBQ dinner. Mel had a pork short rib bathed in an apple cider reduction BBQ sauce, and a cornbread stuffed apple on the side. Move over stuffin muffins. I gave in and actually had a vegetarian eggplant canneloni with phyllo dough instead of pasta on the outside. We shared some apple sorbet and got the pedicab back just in time for yet another glass of port. Mel is getting used to this port stuff. :) Upstairs, to rest in our six feet off the ground antique bed.
We talk about how we can't wait until morning for breakfast. OY VEY !
